Meet Elaine O. Henry, Editor/Publisher of Ceramic Art magazine. Elaine is our distinguished curator for the current SAGE exhibition, Vertical: Platters on the Wall.


Elaine O. Henry, Curator
Elaine Olafson Henry was born in Marshall, Minnesota, and spent her childhood in Santa Ana, California. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Art from the University of Wyoming in 1992, and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Art from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1995.

Prior to her return to her education, she worked as a Marketing Coordinator to a large architectural/engineering/planning firm in Western New York, owned an awards business, served as Marketing Director to a Chamber of Commerce, and also was an independent Marketing Consultant to architects and engineers.

From 2000 through 2007, she served as the Chair of the Department of Art at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, where she taught since 1996. She is a Fellow and former President of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.

Publications featuring her work include an eight-volume series of books entitled World Famous Ceramic Artists’ Studios and Ceramics Artists From Around the World, among many others.

In 2007, she spent a month in China, making work that is featured in the inaugural collection of the new American Ceramics Museum in FuPing, near Xi’an. Her work is in public and private collections in Denmark, Japan, China, Taiwan, Italy, Germany, and throughout the United States. She is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics, an organization of approximately 500 international ceramists.

Elaine is currently the Editor and Publisher of Ceramics: Art and Perception and Ceramics TECHNICAL, two premier internationally known journals.
